With only one reindeer pulling the sleigh, it would take a while to get to Maine. Confident that Dasher knew where he was going, Brit pulled his laptop out of his bag and continued reading up on Alan's past.
He wanted to get in as much info as he could before setting down in Ellsworth. Once there, he would have find a place to live & start his mission spying on Alan.
In 1993, Alan reached a crossroads in his life. After days of thought, he concluded it was time to find a girl. There was nothing more he could do on his own and wanted to share his life and adventures with someone.
He had several obstacles to overcome. His shyness to women, no driver’s license, didn’t drink, so singles bars were out of the question. All the most common ways to get a date had hurdles to cross.
Then he came around with the idea of classifieds. He looked at local newspapers with nothing grabbing his attention.
Somewhere in his life, (Santa notes that even Alan doesn't know when or why) Alan concluded that the perfect girl had to fit three criteria before he could seek a meaningful relationship.
1) She had to be a star trek fan equal to him.
2) She had to think like him.
3) She had to originate from outside Maine.
Alan believed that no relationship would work unless all three conditions were met.
After a few days, he came up with the idea of using his classified section in his star trek fan club magazine to find a girl.
The first girl he wrote to met with little success and he was turned off by the fact she used a pen name.
Alan chose a different approach with the second girl he wrote to. Instead of a conventional letter, he wrote a short 12 line poem and mailed that.
Alan was surprised when he got a poem in return. Her interests were identical to his and she was a star trek fan from Pennsylvania. She fit all three criteria.
Over the next few weeks, Alan and Katy wrote back and forth.
On Christmas morning that year, he got his first phone call from her.
It was early in 1994 where Alan's family planned a trip to Florida and asked him to come along.
Alan lobbied and planned with everyone to get dropped off in PA. On the way home to get a chance to meet Katy in person.
Through some last minute plan changes. Katy finally met Alan at the subway station at the mall in Washington DC.
Alan stayed two weeks in Katy’s hometown before taking the greyhound bus back to Maine.
During that visit, he arranged for Katy to come to Maine to visit for Thanksgiving. She spent a month in Maine with Alan and his family. Even got a seasonal job decorating Christmas wreaths.
After Christmas, Alan went back to Pa. for a few weeks after his seasonal layoff from work. It was this visit that Alan made the bold proclamation:"The next time I come to Pennsylvania, I'm not leaving without you."
About three months later, Katy called Alan and told him she just bought a pickup truck and asked him when she could move to Maine.
About a month later, Alan took the bus back to PA. to help Katy pack and move.
(Santa notes that he stopped briefly in Mass. To visit his two sisters, one was pregnant and went into labor while he was there. Katy & Alan were among the first to see the newborn)
June, Katy landed a job at KFC. Alan continued his work at the factory.
In July, Alan planned a ferryboat trip to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia for Katy's birthday present.
Alan told Katy it was a birthday present to keep her from suspecting his true intentions. That night, he got down on one knee and asked for her hand in marriage.
The following day was a magical day for the couple. Alan describes it as a perfect day where nothing went wrong. Among the highlights was a bus tour of the area, a free gift for Katy from a local storekeeper just because it was her birthday, a single pinball game that went nonstop for one hour, and hitting the jackpot on a slot machine and raking in $400.00 in Canadian quarters. (Santa notes he "may have been" watching them that day. But, doesn't remember for certain.)
The couple got home that night and Katy started spreading the news of the engagement.
They eventually decided on leap year day as their wedding date. Alan felt it was a perfect choice because it was a day that was observed every fourth year, making it special for its uniqueness.
They married on 2/29/1996 on a Thursday afternoon in the basement/chapel of the local Catholic school. Literally after school and before Thursday night bingo.
That weekend, they packed up and headed to Springfield, Ma. To visit family before the honeymoon in Boston.
Unfortunately, weather conditions forced the issue and they started the honeymoon a day early before the approaching snowstorm buried Boston.
They visited several local attractions and had a great time. Alan jokes about seeing the hockey game so they can start their marriage off with a good fight and get it out of the way early to enjoy the rest of their marriage together.
It was a great time for the couple. Its unfortunate the honeymoon was over figuratively as well as literally.
Brit looked up to see they were flying over Canada and would be in Maine soon enough. He was curious about that last line on Alan's file. But, decided he had no time to research it further.
Before he left, Santa suggested setting up a face book account to talk to Alan without tipping off who he was. Brit decided to go with a play on words and used Mrs. Claus' alias with a different spelling. Found a teddy bear picture of Santa's wife online and Jennifer Klaws was born.
He sent out a friend request and closed down the page and shut down the laptop. He could see the Atlantic Ocean and knew they'd be landing shortly. He put the laptop in his bag and started looking for an isolated area to land.
It was dark outside. "That will make landing easier. No witnesses." He told himself. He spotted the Maine Coast Mall and landed behind that for added privacy.
Quickly unpacked his stuff and jumped out of the sleigh. The moment he was clear. Dasher and the sleigh took off. Brit was away from home and all alone with only his bag of stuff.
He knew Alan was at work at Wal-Mart. He would have plenty of time to get there and hide before anyone saw him.
So, he started walking and keeping to the shadows to avoid being spotted.
When he got to the highway, he realized he wasn't going to make it there with all the snow. He would have to resort to magic.
Brit took a small vile of silvery dust from his bag. He put the image of Alan's van in his head and sprinkled a small pinch on his head. He vanished from the edge of the highway and reappeared inside Alan's van. He got the blanket he landed on out from underneath him, wrapped himself up in it. Once convinced no one could see him, he went fast asleep.
Brit woke up a few hours later at Alan's house. He discreetly made his way to the basement to hide. He knew no one went down there during the winter months. So, it was perfect for hiding and spying.
He settled down in the corner furthest from the door and took out his laptop to see if Alan was online. He was stunned to see a simple post up on his Status. While it was a simple phrase. It added volumes to Santa's suspicions and even worried him. He read it a couple more times and refreshed the page hoping there was more to come. But, with no success.
He looked at it one more time before calling Santa for instructions.
"Good Bye."
