Inside Santa's Files: The Story of A. Flye
The holidays were over and Santa and Mrs. Claus had just left for their annual two month post Christmas vacation. The off season at the North Pole had officially begun.
The toymakers were the 1st wave of elves to leave for much needed rest. Having worked the most elf hours the previous nine months, they left first.
The remaining crews left behind were to clean up from the holiday rush and the New Years Eve party.
Britannica looked out the window of the library as dozens of elves vacated their homes for a month long vacation. He wished for the good old days when he was a member of the first wave instead of Santa's CEO of the Nice/Naughty list twin libraries.
But, he knew his responsibly was huge and his vacation time would be limited when he took the job. So, he sat back down at his computer console and grabbed the next folder for transferring into the computer.
He looked at the name and recognized it immeadiatly: "Alan Flye"
"Santa's story teller." He thought to himself. His curiosity now peaked. He knew of Alan's stories. But, not much beyond that. For that matter, nothing at all. The computer files only had activity since 2000 when the twin libraries went online. All the other info was in these files in the libraries. For the last ten years, the library staff has been working around the clock to update the system with everyone on earth that Santa watches over.
"Mind-boggling. Ten years of updating and only on F" Britannica thought." I'm lucky we get vacations at all"
He opens the file to start typing when Octavious walks in.
"Shifts over, Brit. My turn."
Britannica was disappointed. Finally got a folder he wanted to read and his shifts up. Octavious would take over on Alan's folder.
"Hey, friend. I have a favor to ask. “He holds up Alan's folder.” Can you save this for me after you've updated the system with it?"
Octavious looked stunned by the request. "It's against policy. You know that." Then he noticed the name on it." Oh! This is Alan. No wonder you want it saved. He's as popular as he is mysterious. Outside of the flowers and stories, no one knows anything about him except Santa."
"Yes. He's a mystery to everyone." Was all Brit could say.
Octavious thought for a moment. “Brit. You got time to kill. Stay here and we'll read it together. You can dictate and I'll type."
"Octavious, that's against policy too."
Before Octavious could respond, the phone rings. "It's Santa's hotline." He says looking at the phone on the desk.
"Good list library." Octavious answered. Listened briefly to what Santa said and hung up.
"It's Santa." He said half surprised and half stunned. "He said to sit down and do the folder together and stop debating policies."
After hearing of Santa's statement, Brit pulled up a chair and started dictating to Octavious.
"Not much is known about Alan's Past...."
"Not much is known about Alan's past. He was born in a small town in downeast, Maine. (Santa documents missing his visit that year because they moved to Hancock shortly before Christmas).
Early childhood was relatively uneventful as far as Alan was concerned. Mostly stayed at home with the parents who ran a Branch of Maine Bait Company. Helped out as much as he could with the business.
Parents spoiled Alan with various things. Most notable are the comic books he often read. One of his fondest childhood memories are the comic books he got every weekend on the family trip to church.
Alan also showed early signs of a good memory as a child. (Santa notes several trips to Bangor where the father took drives on side roads in an attempt to get Alan lost. Somehow, without being able to read road signs and limited speech, he'd point out the right direction to his favorite restaurant.)
It also noted that he 1st took up an interest in pinball machines that he carries to present day. (Santa notes one of his fondest adult memories includes a pinball machine)
Took interest in several short lived hobbies. Most notable are baseball cards during the decade of the 1980's
Other childhood hobbies include stamps, coins, comics and video games. (Santa notes Alan's favorite quote about his hobbies:” my hobbies got so expensive, collecting information is all that I can afford."
Alan started developing his arts and craft skills early on. He experimented with a little bit of everything. Even those crafts that most boys his age wouldn't touch (knitting, braiding and cake decorating).
School was difficult for Alan. He was picked on and developed shyness issues and mostly kept to himself.
He was often at home helping with the family business. His shyness blocked him from getting friends in grade school. Didn't do sports or anything extracurricular for the same reason.
For the most part, Alan literally stayed at home his entire childhood. He never had any interest in leaving home. He had easy access to everything he wanted."
Brit stopped dictating." I have to leave" I'm losing my voice. I'll look at it later."
"Suit yourself, buddy." Was all that Octavious said?
Brit left the room and headed to his locker. He was fascinated by Alan's history and wished he could stay for more. He knew it would be a while before he could look at it. But, promised himself that day would come someday.
My friends: this concludes part 1 of this mini series. Part 2 will become available in a few weeks and will include my high school days and how Star Trek became a driving force in my life.
